Born in Clichy, France, on 21 February 1991, Mahrez made his senior Algeria debut in May 2014 and joined the country's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He later captained Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title and was named in the tournament Best XI. The Algerian Football Federation publicly marked his international retirement in July 2026 after a reported 12-year national-team career.
Mahrez was a member of the Leicester City side that secured the 2015-16 Premier League title. His performances that season brought the PFA Players' Player of the Year award and the PFA Fans' Premier League Player of the Season award, followed by recognition as CAF Men's Player of the Year for 2016.
Mahrez joined Manchester City from Leicester City on 10 July 2018 under a five-year contract. Manchester City states that he won 11 major trophies during his five seasons at the club, including four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, before leaving for Al-Ahli in July 2023.
Mahrez spent three seasons with Al-Ahli, which credits him with 122 appearances, 37 goals and 46 assists across all competitions, as well as contributions to its 2024-25 and 2025-26 AFC Champions League Elite titles and its 2025 Saudi Super Cup win. The club announced his departure on 4 July 2026. The reviewed evidence does not establish whether he subsequently joined another club or retired from club football.
