Boateng was born in Muswell Hill, London, in 1967 to parents who had emigrated from Ghana in the 1950s. His official career history states that he studied computing before undertaking fashion study at Southgate College.
Institutional accounts characterize Boateng's work as a combination of British bespoke-tailoring techniques and contemporary menswear design. He became the first Savile Row tailor to show at the International Menswear Collections in Paris in 1994, opened his first shop on Vigo Street in 1995 and established a flagship at 30 Savile Row in 2007.
Boateng was appointed Creative Director of Menswear at Givenchy in 2003, with the National Portrait Gallery identifying him as the first Black designer to hold the position. In 2006, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the clothing or fashion industry.
Boateng returned to London Fashion Week in February 2022 after a reported 12-year absence, presenting at the Savoy Theatre. British Airways launched his uniform collection for cabin crew, pilots and airport teams in 2023, and British Vogue reported that he produced custom designs for multiple attendees at the 2025 Met Gala, including Tems.
