At a glance

  • Makinde has served as governor of Oyo State since winning the 2019 governorship election and was elected to a second term in 2023.
  • Before his governorship, he built a career in electrical engineering and the oil-and-gas services sector, including founding Makon Engineering and Technical Services in 1997.
  • He publicly declared an intention in May 2026 to seek the Nigerian presidency in the prospective 2027 election.
  • Reporting and campaign communications identify Makinde with a prospective Allied Peoples Movement presidential ticket and Lawal Daura as his reported running mate, but this was not verified against a final INEC candidate list.

Background and engineering career

Makinde was born on 25 December 1967 in Ibadan, according to his Oyo State Government biography. He completed a B.Sc. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering at the University of Lagos in 1990, worked at Shell Petroleum Development Company from 1990 to 1992 and later held other oil-and-gas engineering roles. He founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services in 1997 and is described by the state biography as Group Managing Director of Makon Group of Companies.

Governor of Oyo State

Makinde won the 2019 Oyo State governorship election as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, receiving 515,621 votes in INEC's result record. He was declared elected to a second term on 19 March 2023; Channels Television reported that he received 563,756 votes. The Oyo State Government continued to list him as executive governor as of 22 August 2026.

National political ambitions

Makinde was not a candidate in Nigeria's 2023 presidential election, when INEC identified Atiku Abubakar as the Peoples Democratic Party nominee. On 14 May 2026, Makinde publicly declared an intention to seek the presidency in the prospective 2027 election. Later reporting and his campaign communications associated him with an Allied Peoples Movement ticket and identified former State Security Service director-general Lawal Daura as his prospective running mate.

Status of the prospective 2027 candidacy

The available evidence supports describing Makinde's presidential effort as a reported prospective candidacy rather than an INEC-certified nomination. It does not establish a complete primary-source chronology of any change from his historical Peoples Democratic Party affiliation to the reported Allied Peoples Movement arrangement. An acceptance-speech page also gives inconsistent 2026 and 2027 dates, preventing confirmation of a precise formal acceptance date.
