Before joining the federal cabinet, Ezekwesili served as a special assistant to Nigeria's president on budget monitoring and the Price Intelligence Unit. The World Bank credited her with spearheading institutional reforms associated with public-sector due process. She subsequently served as Minister of Solid Minerals Development and, from June 2006, as Minister of Education.
The World Bank appointed Ezekwesili Vice President for the Africa Region effective May 1, 2007. She held the regional leadership position until May 2012, when the institution announced that she would return to Nigeria after five years in the role.
Ezekwesili was a founding member of Transparency International and served as its Director for Africa and as a board member. Transparency International recorded her retirement from its board in October 1999, before her later Nigerian federal-government service.
Ezekwesili was a prominent figure in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, which pressed for action after the 2014 abduction of schoolgirls from Chibok. TIME included her in its 2015 TIME 100 list. She later became the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria's presidential candidate but withdrew from the race in January 2019.
Ezekwesili's later work has included education, human-capital policy and public-leadership development. Human Capital Africa identifies her as its Founder and CEO, while a 2025 United Nations event biography used the title President and also described her as founder and chairperson of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance. The variation in her Human Capital Africa title is not resolved by the supplied sources.
