Jokić was born on February 19, 1995, in Sombor, Serbia. He developed professionally with the Serbian club now known as Mega Basket, which contemporary records also identify as Mega Vizura or Mega Leks. The Denver Nuggets selected him with the 41st overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and he signed his first multi-year contract with the team in July 2015.
Jokić won three NBA Most Valuable Player awards, covering the 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2023-24 seasons. His first made him the first Serbian and first Nuggets player to receive the award; excluding undrafted Moses Malone, he was also the lowest-drafted NBA MVP. In 2023, he led Denver to the franchise's first NBA championship and received the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award.
Although listed as a center, Jokić is also notable for his playmaking and rebounding. During the 2025-26 regular season, he averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.7 assists across 65 games, finishing as the NBA leader in both rebounds and assists per game.
