Sokoto authorities announced Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III as the new Sultan on November 2, 2006, following the death of his brother and predecessor, Sultan Muhammadu Maccido, in an airplane crash. Nigerian and international institutional sources identify Abubakar as the 20th Sultan of Sokoto. A later account refers to a November 6 crowning, leaving the date of any separate formal coronation ceremony unresolved.
Abubakar is President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The NSCIA describes itself as Nigeria's apex Islamic authority and says it coordinates Islamic affairs nationally as an organization recognized by federal and state governments. His work in that capacity includes public engagement with national officials; in August 2023, he led an NSCIA delegation to meet President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Before assuming the sultanate, Abubakar had a lengthy career in the Nigerian military. Institutional and Nigerian news profiles report that he served as Nigeria's defence attaché in Pakistan before returning to Nigeria in 2005. Sources differ over his rank, with contemporary appointment reporting describing him as a colonel and later profiles calling him a retired Brigadier-General.
