Badenoch was born in London in 1980 to Nigerian parents and spent much of her childhood in Nigeria before returning to the United Kingdom at age 16, according to the Associated Press. She completed a Master of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Sussex in 2003 and later gained a law degree from Birkbeck in 2009. The University of Sussex states that she began her career in information technology before moving into consultancy and financial services.
Badenoch entered elected public office in September 2015, when she filled a Conservative vacancy in the London Assembly and was appointed to its Police and Crime and Transport Committees. She entered the House of Commons as the MP for Saffron Walden in June 2017 and represented that constituency until the 2024 general-election dissolution. She has represented North West Essex since 4 July 2024.
Before becoming opposition leader, Badenoch held senior government office. She served as Minister for Women and Equalities from 25 October 2022 to 5 July 2024 and as Secretary of State for Business and Trade from 7 February 2023 to 5 July 2024.
Badenoch defeated Robert Jenrick in the 2024 Conservative leadership contest and became party leader and Leader of HM Official Opposition on 2 November 2024. The House of Commons Library records her vote share as 56.5%, with just over 95,000 of 132,000 eligible party members participating. The Associated Press reported that the result made her the first Black woman to lead a major United Kingdom political party.
