Chan was born Chan Kong-sang in Hong Kong on April 7, 1954. At age seven, he entered Yu Zhanyuan's Hong Kong-China Opera Institute, where he studied Peking opera and kung fu and performed with the Seven Little Fortunes. He made an early screen appearance in The Seven Little Valiant Fighters in 1962 before working in the Hong Kong film industry as an actor and martial-arts choreographer.
After signing with Lo Wei's company, Chan adopted the professional name Jackie Chan in 1976. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master established his breakthrough as a kung fu comedy star in 1978. The following year, he directed, wrote and starred in The Fearless Hyena, reflecting the combination of performance, filmmaking and action design that became central to his career.
Chan's career later included Hong Kong and American productions. Rumble in the Bronx received a nationwide United States release in 1996, and the Rush Hour series ran from 1998 to 2007. For CZ12, he was credited as director, producer and a screenplay contributor, and he shared the 32nd Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography with He Jun. His wider career recognition includes an Academy Honorary Award in 2016 and Locarno's Pardo alla Carriera in 2025.
Chan was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador during a visit to Cambodia in 2004. UNICEF's live biographical listing continued to identify him in that role when accessed on August 23, 2026, although the listing did not state an end date.
