Industry-reference and contemporaneous press material identify Ferguson as Connie Masilo and give her date of birth as 10 June 1970. A 1996 Mail & Guardian profile reported that she moved with her family from South Africa to Botswana at about age five, establishing ties to both countries in her upbringing. Sources disagree on whether her birthplace was Kimberley, South Africa, or Lobatse, Botswana, so neither location can be treated as settled.
Ferguson's long association with South African television is anchored by her portrayal of Karabo Moroka in Generations, beginning with the programme's first episode in February 1994. She left the role in 2010, saying that the decision was substantially motivated by a wish to develop the business side of her career. She later played Harriet Khoza in The Queen and returned as Karabo in Generations: The Legacy in 2023.
Ferguson co-established Ferguson Films with Shona Ferguson in 2010, and both appeared in the company's first television production, Rockville. Netflix credited her as an executive producer and cast member for the second season of Kings of Jo'Burg, while 2025 reporting identified her in the same capacities for its third season. She was also among the cast of Netflix's 2024 South African action thriller Heart of the Hunter.
