Before holding senior elected office, he worked at Mobil Oil Producing Nigeria and rose to the position of Treasurer.
Tinubu represented Lagos West in the Nigerian Senate during the Third Republic, serving from 1992 to 1993. After the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, he became involved with the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition and subsequently went into exile during military rule.
Tinubu served two terms as Governor of Lagos State from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007. This period established Lagos State governance as a central part of his public record before his later role in national party politics.
Tinubu was among the politicians involved in the 2013 formation of the All Progressives Congress through a merger of opposition groups. As the party's candidate in 2023, he was declared elected president with 8,794,726 votes and assumed office on May 29, 2023. Official State House material continued to identify him as president as of August 22, 2026.
