West is a highly accomplished player - having won leagues in both France and Italy. He is able to play on the right hand-side, but prefers, and operates better when playing as a centre back. He hit the scene at just 19 years old, with Auxerre more than willing to give the promising youngster a contract, and a chance to play at the highest level. He proved himself and was soon on his way to play in Europe's top league, Serie A, apparently turning down the chance to go to Manchester United, to play for Inter. Internationally, West has played for the Super Eagles on many occasions, though his favourite match came with the victory in the 1996 Olympics. He is a solid defender, who works religiously to stay at his best defensively, whilst he also has the ability to bring the ball forwards. A stint at derby County ensures that he is well known by the England team, who will know what they are up against when they come to taking Nigeria on in the World Cup Finals.
