Profile:
Jay-Jay Okocha has been a mainstay in the Nigerian national side since helping them win the African Nations cup in 1994. This will be the third World Cup that he has played in, and he is still only 28. He started professional football as a sixteen year old, and rapidly progressed from local club Rangers International (Nigeria) to the heights of Borussia Neunkirchen and Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany). He then moved to Fenerbahce (Turkey) in 1995. Okocha soon became a key player for the Turkish Club and helped them win their 13th successful title in 1996. He also helped Nigeria to an Olympic Gold Medal in the same year. It wasn?t long before all the top clubs started show close interest in the young up and coming star, but it was Paris Saint-Germain who fought off some stiff competition and came up with the goods to entice the youngster away from the Turkish Champions - they paid an astronomical $17 Million, a club record signing. Like team-mate Kanu, Okocha is able to perform the most stunning of tricks at wil

Murphey: Latest News

Profile:
Akanji has played a number of games for the Nigerian national side, despite the fact that he plays for the highly unfashionable Malian side of Sliema. He has found himself on the sidelines much of the time, with Shorunmu being preferred by Shaibu, to take up the position between the posts. He is confident and comfortable on the ball, and willing to throw himself at the ball if that's what it takes. He has become a hero with the Sliema fans for helping to stabilise what was previously wobbly defence - adding his experience and communication skills to a young team. In Japan he will be hoping to showcase himself to all of the world's top coaches, and hopefully secure a deal to the lucrative European leagues, although he is still more than happy plying his trade in Mali. Akanji is a very able substitute 'keeper who will not let the coach, the fans, or himself, down.
