RE: Toyota Plans Big For Nigerians
Toyota plans ‘budget cars’ for Nigerians

By Rasheed Bisiriyu

Toyota Nigeria Limited has unveiled plans to introduce ‘budget cars’ to enable average Nigerian income earners buy new vehicles.

Budget cars are new vehicles with basic features, which make them easily affordable to low-income earners.

The budget vehicles currently in circulation are mostly from Korea and China, and they include the Piccato, QQ and Gel.

The Head of Marketing, TNL, Mr. Andrew Ajuyah, said in Lagos on Friday that its parent company in Japan, Toyota Motor Corporation, was already working on the project.

Ajuyah, who spoke with journalists at an interactive session, also noted that the introduction of the Chinese vehicles into Nigeria was a big challenge to the major players in the nation’s auto industry.

He said that a TMC team from Japan had visited the country to obtain information on the of cars that would be acceptable to Nigerians as budget cars.

Apart from the challenge from the Chinese and Korean cars, Ajuyah said the company was determined to use the budget cars to discourage the purchase of tokunbo and grey vehicles.

Although he acknowledged that the budget car segment was the trend in the automobile industry, Ajuyah explained that the TNL could not immediately operate in the market because it did not have models suitable for it.

Prolly emulating Nissan that prosposed a $3K car for India by 2012. I wonder how our traffic will be if Toyota builds an economy car for Nigerians @ the cost of N300k.

Being able to purchase a car is one thing. Maintaining it is
a different matter.
I just don't see how this is going to work out.
Me thinks we will see an increase pf broken down jallopys
on Nigeria's streets.

@Iyabo, why cant we maintain a new car when we cormfortably maintain our old faithfuls? My problem with the plan is congestion. Imagine 3rd mainland bridge @ 730am monday morning after this car jamboree.

In America, they have HOV(high occupancy vehicle lanes) i.e special roads built for drivers that agree to pick a passenger. That system is expensive because it entails building a separate road on top of the existing ones entirely to forestall all-alone drivers and encourage those that car pool.

If Toyota can make true their promise, our Nigerian dream is at hand. Who said we are not going to the promised land? I've started saving for my car and all these women that do gra gra for me including "you" will soon bow. UP Toyota.

I feel you Ciro!

And for the Nay Sayers what do you propose should be done? Negating an idea is easy and any idiot can do that, proposing alternatives is the real challenge and left for the wise and useful.

Many of you here may not be old enough to know
about the odd and even number system used to
try and control the congestion problems.

After a while people got wise and bought a second
car and had it registered so they had both odd and
even number plated registrations. So back to congestion.

Can you see a way out??
