When Disaster Strikes
The recent disaster that befell the people of New
Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama is reminiscent of
the destruction that embattled the city of Sodom and
Gomorrah. Everyone was running for his or her life:
nobody laid claims to anything. Medical Doctors,
Lawyers, Accountants, executives, professionals and
every individual ran to seek a safe haven from the
raging fire from God. Unfortunately, only Lot and his
family were able to escape the piercing anger of God.
Most sadly, Lot’s wife perished as she turned to look
at the city, in disobedience to the command of God.
Dearly beloved, the recent disaster that befell the
aforementioned states should send a very strong
message to us that life is futile and vain. Within a
twinkle of an eye, all you’ve labored for (for many
years) could be wiped away. What is that thing that
you hold on so dear to? You cherished and admire that
thing which has consequently taken the position of God
in your life. As a result, you are proud and look down
on others. You are consumed and overshadowed by pride
and self-gratification. Remember, New Orleans!
Everything you’ve worked so hard for could be wiped
out within a twinkle of an eye.
When New Orleans was attacked by Hurricane Katrina,
everyone tried to escape. Houses, cars, and a lot of
personal belongings were destroyed. Many lost
everything they’ve strive hard to accomplish.
Thousands lost their lives and many were reduced to
homelessness and emptiness. Everything was lost.
Dearly beloved, you may not have time for God now. You
are busy working relentlessly to accumulate wealth.
Remember, New Orleans! You don’t have time for God
now: you will do when disaster strikes. But I hope it
will not be too late. Jesus Christ says, “For what is
a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in
exchange for his soul?”(Matthew 16:26).
Sept. 11 has come and gone; London train bombing has
come and gone; Spain train bombing has come and gone;
Tsunami disaster has come and gone. We have forgotten
soon. Very soon, the disaster in New Orleans,
Mississippi, and Alabama would also be forgotten. Yet
men will not seek God, men will not repent of their
sins, Gays and lesbians are waxing stronger, the ban
of prayers in our public schools is gaining ground,
pornography and sexual immorality is on the increase.
Yet we sometimes we ponder why disaster strikes. God
want true repentance. Let me say, without any shadow
of doubt that if the entire nation would repent of
their sins and begin to pray and live in holiness, any
impending disaster could be adverted. Effective prayer
and holiness changes things. The Bible says in 2
Chronicles 7:14, “if My people who are called by My
name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My
face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will
hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal
The only antidote to the persistence malady in this
nation is “true repentance.” This country must repent
of her sins and return to the Almighty God. There is
too much evil, too much sins and God is angry with
sinners everyday. However, if you are bent on
continuing in your sins, Remember, Sodom and Gomorrah!
