Comparing the Finns, the Irish
and the English people, I can say, the Finns are the highest drunkards.
I called an old friend of mine sometime ago and
when I told her I was in Finland, she was where in the world is Finland?
She isnt the first person that would ask me such question and I was wondering
if I was just in a strange foreign land where no one actually knows. Even
some asorock members have asked me similar questions. >>
Finland is in the Northern part
of Europe. The capital of Finland is Helsinki. Finland is bordered by Norway
to the North, Sweden to the west, Russia to the east and Estonia to the south.
The population in Finland is less than 6 million.
Finlands official language is Finnish and most Finns also speak
Swedish. It was said that Finland was part of Sweden long time ago.
In the far north of Finland (Lapland), the sun does not set during
the winter for about 73 days. It
can be very cold and almost up 45
in the northern
part of Finland. Sometimes when our fridges and freezers are filled up with
foodstuffs, we put the food on the balcony because it gets frozen and even
our drinks. I imagine why our blood and brains dont get frozen. Anyway,
thanks to God. Presently, the weather
and very windy.
Summer can be very warm and sometimes a bit cold. It gets to almost +35
. Mid-summer Day I guess is mid June or late June, the sun doesnt set at
Finland present president is a woman. Im not wrong. A woman rules the country.
I guess Nigeria should give women that chance as well so we could all see
the difference. >>
The Finnish people are very honest and truthful. That is one thing I love
about them. They are very shy people and introverts. The only time you they
talk and laugh with foreigners is when they are drunk. Then, they can tell
you about their life history. For example, if you meet a Finn in the bar
and you guys get talking and laughing, you wont believe it if the next day
you see the same Finn shying away from you.
When it comes to alcohol, they can get drunk but one thing is that
they can never forget the way to their houses. Both their women and men get
drunk. Once its Friday, the pubs are filled up with people. Comparing the
Finns, the Irish and the English people, I can say, the Finns are the highest
drunkards. May 1st is called vappu
(free). It is a law free day in Finland. You can do whatever you like. People
buy alcohol and celebrate. There and then you get to know the real side of
the Finnish people. >>
The Finns are also proud of their saunas. A sauna is a very hot room where
there is an electric stove with rocks and some seats made of woods. People
do go in the sauna naked. They pour water in the stove and the room becomes
hot. After they sweat for some minutes, they go out to swim, bath, snow bath
or sometimes jump in to what is called avanto Avanto is a hole made in
the lake (sea or river) when it is frozen. It is believed that the sauna
heals, relaxes and heals the mind. Im sure youll be wondering if Ive ever
been there. Yes, Ive been to the sauna. Especially during winters, I love
it. It soothes the whole body and makes me feel relaxed. Though, Ive never
tried the avanto. People do say board meetings are held in the sauna. Most
offices in Finland have Saunas.>>
Finlands economy is one of the best in Europe. Though things are somewhat
expensive. Education is free. The only thing you pay for is when you are
writing your Masters degree. The Government pay students grant each month
to every student-studying full time. The Government pays 80% of the student
apartment and feeding money for the month is included.
Though, it isnt enough sometimes but as they say, half bread is
better than none. Finland is very clean and neat. It is one of the neatest
countries in the world and the least corrupt country. I dont know how they
did it but one thing Im sure about is that their long ago leaders have set
a very good foundation for their future generations.
When I first go to Finland, I realised that their taxies are cars used by
commissioners and rich people in Nigeria. Unlike Nigeria where two wires
have to be joined before a taxi can start and sometimes, you even see the
intestines of the doors of the car. Sometimes I miss that aspect of life
where you have to fight with the conductor to collect your change in the
bus. Transportation is Finland is very good. They really work on time. >>
I almost forgot the Cruise. Finland has different ships that go on cruises
to Stockholm (capital of Sweden) and Tallinn (capital of Estonia). The most
common cruise is taking the ship to Sweden. You spend two nights and a day.
There are cabins (rooms) to sleep. Its about 20 hours to Sweden from Helsinki.
Tallinn is also common. You can go to Tallinn on a cruise for 20 hours without
getting out of the ship. The trip to Tallinn is just a night. You get to
visit Sweden and Estonia. The ships can contain about 2,500 people with cars
and lots more. There are different restaurants, pubs, clubs and cafes to
go. You can go to sauna, swim and relax. You can also go watch a movie. There
is a tax-free shop on the ship and alcohols are extremely cheap there for
the Finns. When you visit Finland, try and go on a cruise. Im sure you will
love it. >>
